ANGELITA OF ANZIO
The
statue of “Angelita di Anzio” stands on a simple base on the western
coast and it has been there since January 22nd,
1979.

|
The
stylised little girl releasing seagulls from her hands is light
and thin. The bronze statue is the work of the sculptor Giorgio
Capellini. “Angelita” was and will always be one of the many
children, symbols of the pain of the frightened, innocent humanity
victim of the brutality of war The little girl represented by the
sculptor is the one who was found alone, dejected and crying on
the beach, by a soldier of the “Royal Scottish Fusiliers”,
S.C. Hayes, who had landed in Anzio along with the Anglo-Americans
troops in January 1944. In the middle of heavy bombing of the
beachhead of Anzio by the German artillery,
|
 |
just
few days after she had been found, “Angelita” died, struck by a
bullet, in the arms of a nurse that was taking care of her.
 |
Inquiries
made at the moment, could not give the little girl her real
identity. This is not a legend but a sad reality of those days not
very far in the past. In honour of Angelita, the Town wanted to
dedicate a monument, placed in one of the prettiest points of
Anzio, to keep alive the memories of the brutality of war, in
contrast to one of the beauties of humanity: the innocence of
children. |
